Music to Stab By

When I saw the announcement of iTunes controls coming in Patch 1.12, I immediately thought, “What would be the perfect songs to complement my online killing habits?” Well… ok, first I thought, “How am I going to free up FIVE keybindings?”, but immediately after that I started concocting the Ultimate WoW playlist; nothing can throw off an intense Furbolg genocide session quicker than “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

The Criteria
Keep in mind, my main is a Rogue, and it was the burst-damage, stab-and-run playstyle I was trying to accentuate here. I suppose if I was healbotting on my Druid, this list would probably be totally inappropriate. Anyway, the primary criteria used were:

  1. Tempo. It’s got to be Fast and Furious without being 2 Fast or 2 Furious, yknowwhati’msay?
  2. Lyrical suitability. Do they mention stabbing someone? Killing people? General glorification of bloodshed? Yes, please.
  3. Tone. Dark? not too upbeat or poppy?
  4. Instrumentation. I’m not a snob, but I find that I prefer to WoW to heavy guitar, screaming vocals, and maybe some rock piano.

The List
I ended up with hundreds of songs that met these criteria, but after testing them out on the PTR, I thought I’d highlight the songs that stoood out, maximizing my WoW experience.

  • Guns N’ Roses – Live and Let Die
If the ranking chart that pops up at the end of every WSG is any indicator, you should be concerned with your Killing Blows to Deaths ratio. What better way to directly express this goal than to listen to the great Paul McCartney song from the eponymous James Bond movie, as covered by GNR. At the same time you can reminisce about when Axl Rose used to be cool…
  • Toadies – Possum Kingdom
You might think that this song is only for the Undead, because it may or may not be about Vampires, but I think anyone would agree that spamming Sinister Strike to a full-blast “DO YOU WANNA DIE” complemented with a thumping bassline is something that stabbers of all races can get behind.
  • David Bowie – I’m Afraid of Americans (NiN remix)
Yeah, yeah, the use of RL countries might be considered a lore violation on some servers, but the sense of paranoia and the tone of the song is just right when you’re stealthing around enemy territories.
  • Filter – Hey Man, Nice Shot
Well, he’s probably not explicitly talking about “Cheap Shot” or “Kidney Shot”, but you can imagine that he is. And the screaming vocals really complement a good stab-o-rama.
  • Evanescence – My Immortal
I think I just felt compelled to throw something a little modern into the mix so as not to alienate the kiddies out there. Still, Evanescence has the goth-y (but don’t call them goth!) feel that will appeal to RP-ers, and you can tap your keyboard in time to the distinct piano harmonies, if you need more ways to entertain yourself. Also, Amy Lee’s penchant for the word “Wound” makes any of their songs work well in a WoW context.
  • Rage Against the Machine – Killing in the Name
Now, this is the case when the intense tone and energetic, chaotic guitar make the case for suitability in spite of a complete lyrical mismatch. I can’t understand anything that Zack de la Rocha says, but I’m pretty sure that the song actually has an anti-war message. The lyrics “I won’t do what you tell me” and criticizing people for “wearing the badge” seem pretty inappropriate while I’m frantically running systematic killing quests for whatever NPC is willing to buy me off for a few silver or a shiny bauble or two. Still, the song is pretty kickass.
  • Prodigy – Smack my Bitch Up
Maybe it’s more of a specifically-PVP oriented song, but it has a great, energetic feel to it, and at least one of the two lines repeated constantly throughout the song is readily applicable to your player-killing experience.
  • Offspring – Come Out and Play
Ok, what are “factions” other than big, organized gangs? Sure, the Alliance and Horde are a little more poly-ethnic than the Jets and the Sharks, but come-on, red flags vs. blue flags? Doing drug-runs for the apothecary in Undercity? Collecting centaur ears? Whether you’re mindlessly questing or engaging in a Battleground turf war, this song delivers.

The Honorable Mentions

  • Blue Öyster Cult – Godzilla
Sick of running around at REGULAR mount speed? You, sir, need a Carrot on a Stick. Unfortunately, the quest requires you to run around to a ton of places and eventually kill a lizard that bears a striking resemblence to a beast that once terrorized Tokyo (and much later, inspired a horrible Matthew Broderick film) in both name and visage. While you’re doing these mindless quest chains, I recommend looping this song to keep your eyes on the prize. You can even sing over the chorus- “Ohhhh, Gahz’rilla!” ALSO, it’s great practice for Guitar Hero, it’s one of the difficult “Face-Melters”.
  • Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm
Super cheesy, but if you’re riposting in PVP… you can disarm them with a smile. OK… I’m done.

These playlists must have predated patch 1.12, though. What are your top WoW-ing songs? And more importantly, what keybindings are you gonna use?

You know this is Mac only, right? It has been a long time since something in the gamer world was Mac only.

That entire Prodigy CD is awesome (“Fat of the Land” if you didn’t know). Try killing to “Fire Starter” sometime. I also enjoy killing to a little Powerman 5000, “When Worlds Collide” or “Blast of to Nowhere”.

Macy- Yeah I know it’s Mac only. It’s about time we got something just for ourselves, right?

Burnside- Of course I stab to Firestarter, I just thought it might be lame to have one artist appear multiple times (if I was a pyro mage I probably would use that song instead of this one anyway). If I duped artists I probably would have had another Rage song, too…

Whoops, I meant ZWY, not Macy. I think I’m up-down dyslexic… which explains why I’m often running the wrong way in WSG.

I think I’m going to bind my “Y”, “U”, and “I”, keys, as I don’t think I’m using them for anything at the moment…

I use iTunes when I play WoW, and I use the shotkeys of my Mi*****ft keyboard to navigate in library while playing. But I must say Michael’s playlist is something really close to what I would do, really really close, add Cock the Hammer from Cypress Hill and some Dead Can Dance song for my tribe role playing time (something with heavy percussions as we’re a Vaudou Troll tribe :)).

I’d love to see an addon that would switch playlists when you went to different zones. Set up your on Stormwind or Darnasas tunes.

I’m playing this (http://cdbaby.com/cd/boekelheide) while I farm The Blood of Heroes.
