A Home of Our Own

Part of what I love about WoW, and the reason that I spend so much time playing, is the immersiveness that the game environment offers. I’ve watched sunsets and sunrises, I take screenshots like a tourist snapping pics, I’ve stood in Stormwind watching the fireworks, saying “Ooh” and “Aaah” along with everyone else…just as you would in real life.

High on my list of what I’d love to see added to the game is housing. It doesn’t have to be personal housing, but guild housing would be a huge benefit – especially if you could make or buy items to personalise it with. Now, I’m not talking Sims here, but a place to have guild meetings in, an environment for social interaction that is more personal than hanging out in front of the bank in IF. A place to come “home” to.

Haven’t you ever watched the Harry Potter movies and lusted after the Gryffindor common room? How cool would that be?

Originally Blizzard had toyed with the idea of player housing (you can see a beta screenshot of it here: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/8095/1604/1600/WoWHousing3.0.jpg) but dropped it.

They never explained how or why it didn’t work, but I pine for something so simple as a bungalow in Tanaris or Loch Modan. ;)

That would rule. The space it would take up on servers would be insane once all is said and done. However, they now have the funds and the ability to do so. I certainly hope they do. I think we should all have our hopes up for it simply because:
    1. They haven’t said no yet.
    2. They know their is a huge demand for such a feature. Who wouldn’t want that?
    3. Flying mounts? Housing is the next logical step. Why? Becaus I say so. ;)

I love wow too! Isn’t it the best? I thought it would only be in dreams to have such a beautiful home. But wow made it possible for me. Who says dreams don’t come true.

It would be very difficult to actually have – even if you restrict it to guild housing, you still won’t have enough physical room to have a physical location for each dwelling. (Unless you want urban sprawl, with the demand for Stormwind housing leading to the deforestation of Goldshire and Northshire to make way for buildings.) Perhaps “instanced” housing, where you go through a door and are in your guild’s version? That would work.

That’s what I was going to chime in with. That would rule.

You know why they didn’t put it in game? It wasn’t perfect.

When it is, then they will put it in game.

One theory: what would the cost of the housing be and will it be accessible to casual players. Casual players and especially roleplayers will do more with housing than your hardcore types. But your hardcore types would be the ones who could afford it. Balance? Think on that and with Blizzard’s commitment to the casual player like myself, it is no wonder they kept it out of the game.

That and where would you put housing at? There is only so much prime real estate and quite frankly, I don’t want the outdoors being mucked up with houses.

The only viable way that I can think of is instanced housing. You wouldn’t want urban sprawl, definitely – but if (in capital cities) you could go through a portal or gateway into the “residential area” that would work. That would also give people the ability to run shops, etc. It would be incredible on RP realms, definitely – but even on PvE realms, I could see the need for guild housing.

Actually you have a Guild Hall in Guild wars. Your guild hall even includes an arena where you can PvP with your fellow guildies.

One of the very few things missing in WoW.

Star Wars Galaxies did this sooooo well. But they had multiple worlds with 1000’s and 1000’s of km’s of space. It took 4 years for it to be filled to max.

WoW cannot compete with that. Instance housing is the only option, and its a tacky affair. Everyone walking through the same door? Come on thats no too personal now is it? Not being able to see far off in the distance as your cruising on your mount that your home is coming into site? And what would you put in it? 4000 linen cloth? Centaur hoof? Some blokes rotting head?

If you were allowed to put anything in there, then the banking system is ruined and would need an overhaul. If your not then people shout RESTRICTIVE! I personally dont think they will ever get it to work or ever implement it.

Blizzard only put soft touches into their games, they dont have the balls to play with anything major.
