You think your realm has world PvP? You have no idea

Just got this e-mail about what might be the biggest world PvP event ever, and if you aren’t on Dark Iron then you missed it.

I don’t know if you guys are hip to this yet, but last night the guilds that compromise the Penny Arcade Alliance on Dark Iron launched the largest offensive in World Of Warcraft history.
After several days of planning and reconnaissance the members of the Penny Arcade Alliance were told to meet up in Darnassus for a surprise.

At 7pm server time everyone was told that the Penny Arcade Alliance was launching a full scale attack on all three horde cities.

Everyone immediately began forming raids and awaited their assignments. Groups were sent out on diversionary raids against the Orgrimmar gates, Brill, Tarren Mill, and Crossroads, while the elite PVE raiders (who cancelled their AQ40 and BWL runs) were summoned into the capital cities for assaults on the racial leaders, as well as every single NPC we could find.

By 7:20 Cairne became the first racial leader to fall. Within minutes Thrall, Vol’jin, and Varimathras were joined him. Sylvanas herself was down to 50% when the stress of having over 300 people inside the Undercity brought the eastern kingdoms down completely.

But we weren’t done.

As soon as the eastern kingdoms were back up the group that had successfully razed all of Orgrimmar (and Razor Hill, and Sen’jin village, and pretty much everything else in Durotar/The Barrens) hopped on a zeppelin and redirected their attack towards the Undercity.

After a long battle to her throne room, we were ultimately felled by massive lag and another server wipe.

The PAA however, was comfortable with the fact that we’d just wiped out every single horde NPC, in every major horde city (and their outlying towns) in a surgical strike usually reserved for bombing civilians in Iraq.

The gauntlet has been thrown down. This is the face of world PVP now.

Nice job. Speaking as a hordie on Dalaran, we never see that kind of thing anymore cause just having a 40man raid on a capital city slows our server down to the point where it can’t be played. World PvP is broke and Bliz’s efforts to get it to limp along by introducing the tower battles in EPL and the Silithyst gathering in Silithus is a poor attempt at best. Glad to see folks are still doing their best to bring the pain.

I’d like to see them come here an try it…boy I’d show them a thing or three….

Actually, you’d think you’d be showing the guys at a gate a thing or two while the summoned raid killed your mans and then you.

Also, that census thing is wrong, there’s no 11:1 on any server in the game. The *activity* ratio is 1.1:1 and there’s a little asterisk there saying the horde report aint accurate =(

11:1 ? Yeah right. You can’t set too much by warcraftrealms if only one side is uploading, as is the case on dark iron. that 1 with an asterik? that means only a single person in all the horde of dark iron has uploaded ANYTHING in the last month.

I am of the belief that once DK’s are history, civility will be as well. NPC’s and Quest Givers will be favored targets like in the old days. (60 Troll Rogue keeps killing the Defias Messenger? Deal with it.) Back in the day a Flight Master was a force to be reckoned with, or better, avoided. I’m sure a properly geared mage nowadays can Arcane Explosion her and her Griffins, and clear the Flight Point much like clearing a graveyard flag in the Alterac Valley.

And nothing will egg griefers on more than for folks to object and whine about it. And they will. The griefer’s “end-game” will be griefing you, and you’ll provide them endless entertainment by whining, particularly in the forums. “So and so keeps killing quest givers” will make so-and-so a celebrity to be emulated.

This uber-raid would NEVER have happened if DK’s were still an issue. On the week that all honor (and dishoner) is utterly erased from the memory banks, that’s when they pull this off.

And this isn’t a one-off, I think, but the wave of the future. As Manif proclaims.

Why didn’t anyone pull it off earlier? I.e. pre-DK system?

    Lack of sufficienly geared assassins?

Are the current racial bosses being updated as the players are? When players get full Tier 3 gear, is Thrall being buffed as well? (When does Thrall go raid? He’s always hanging out in Orgrimmar. What a poseur.)

Between now and the release of the Burning Expansion, I expect we’ll be seeing a lot of this. The expansion will pull the raiders off, but the griefers will stick around for kicks.

We’re in ur Orgrimmar, killin’ ur Thrallz

The poster was correct about DK’s being removed having spurred this event. This is the price of removing that from the honor equation, the ability to slaughter everything without care. We choose a fun event for a one time only strike against all three major Horde cities and the surrounding towns, a world first I believe. People who enjoy the griefing side of end game will camp these towns and make it miserable for players leveling and questing. Some people will complain, others will say PvE is that way, and others still will retaliate. Nobody will win.

Don’t forget though, stress testing the servers was also in the picture. Imagine the expansion pack when both Horde and Alliance are in the same town together and want to kill one another. Our little raid showed that cramming 200 people into the Undercity to kill a racial leader leads to the best defense against PvP…the lag field and eventual death of the eastern kingdoms. Unfortunatly, the EK did not drop any good loot.

I was, at one time, part of the upstart Panda Attack due to my daily readings of

As awesome as this is, I expect nothing lese from Dark Iron.

I think the next “under-the-hood” upgrade for Blizz would be perhaps beef up the “instances” server (per battlegroup) and include capital cities within that server. Hell, assign a server to handle the load for the capital cities to encourage large scale World PvP events like this.

That sounds like a fantastic event, good work Dark Iron folks! Sadly, I don’t think the World of Warcraft gives enough credit to it’s players.

Check out my post regarding this for more thoughts:

Follow-up: this leads to my wishes for WoW for every single Realm to be different another.

Could you imagine, you roll up on one only to find Ironforge occupied by Orcs? What do new Dwarfs and Gnomes do? Perhaps the Alliance could have runs to escort newbies from the Dwarven lands in Stormwind.

What if on another server that Alliance have reclaim Lorderon?

As much as the Burning Crusade might unite Horde and Alliance, Blizz could do a lot to extend the game by dropping the gauntlet of war.

    To> KINLESS:

Yes, racial bosses are being updated and buffed in levels, as are major city guards, when the patch drops this Tuesday. I don’t recall the exact levels they’re going to, but it was further encouragement for us to pull this off prior to the patch.

*cry* all you racist elves and humans killing everyone that doesn’t look like you. What did we ever do to you? We throw off the shackles of the Lich King and the Burning Legion, and are finally free, only to slaughtered by the alliance.
