Windows 7 and World of Warcraft

win7_logo

So Windows 7 has been out for a couple of weeks now, and most enthusiasts who are really familiar with Microsoft’s new OS have been running the beta and the release candidate for months now to get a feel for it and shake out any issues the new OS may have. But there is one community that’s been somewhat absent from the discussion: the World of Warcraft community!

Granted, Windows 7 isn’t really fundamentally different from Windows Vista, although I think everyone would agree that it’s an improvement – so there’s no reason to believe that if you’re running WoW under Windows Vista that it won’t run just as well in Windows 7. Players making the leap from Windows XP to Windows 7 who are forced to wipe and do a full install may have a little more heartburn though, but it should still work without issue.

How about you, dear readers? Any of you upgraded to Windows 7 full-time and have any stories to share? Was getting World of Warcraft running, patched, and your favorite add-ons installed a breeze or was it a horrific trial that you’re just waiting to tell everyone about? Shout it out in the comments.

I’ll follow this post up shortly with more experiences with Windows 7 and World of Warcraft as I hear more from you and the rest of the community, and get hands on myself!

I have been running Windows 7 for about 2 weeks now, and I play WoW about 4 to 5 times a week. I use a Logitech MX518 gaming mouse.

So far I have had these minor issues; in order of severity, worst to least.
1 – Aperiodically, but fairly frequently, every 5 to 15 minutes, my mouse will kind of freeze, and I’ll get the “ba dump” sound, as if Win 7 is detecting a new peripheral, then it’ll ‘come back’ as normal. This hiccup lasts 2 to 4 seconds. If it was any more frequent, I’d uninstall Win 7. I updated from Win 7 drivers to Logitech’s SetPoint. Not sure if it’s better or worse.

2 – The WoW client has crashed on me a few times. Mostly when minimizing to another window. I haven’t noticed it in past few days. I do run as administrator now. Not sure if that helps or not. (The first crash or two I thought was tied to the mouse issue #1, but now not so sure).

3 – The other day I had some “disconnections” from the server. As I was also disconnected from Vent, it was “me”, and probably not a WoW/Win7 issue, but throwing it out there.

Overall, I’m disappointed. If I was a raider, I’d have already gone back to vista…which although a bit slower, was always very stable for me.

i havent really had any trouble with it yet, but i havent really played heavily on WoW since ive installed it. the only real complaint i have on it is the fact that when i upgraded to windows 7, all my addons stopped working, but it just mught be the fact that i havent done a clean install, doing that tonight, probably fix that problem, all in all im pretty impressed with it, lot smoother than it was with vista.
