[Spoiler Alert] Fall of the Lich King Cinematic Unveiled – (Working Video)

I’m the type of person who loves to spoiler myself on things like this, but I absolutely hate spoilering other people – so if you’re not interested in finding out what happens when we eventually confront Arthas in Icecrown Citadel and what happens with him and other major figures up to this point, stop reading now!

Seriously, the video of the cinematic is after the jump. DO NOT CLICK if you don’t want to be spoilered. If you do want to be spoilered however, please, by all means, read on.

There – so if you’re here, you want to see the ending, or you’re like me and in a guild that will probably never get to the ending on our own, or at least not until Cataclysm comes out and we’re all at the new level cap.

So clearly the stories about there having to be a Lich King and someone having to wear the Helm in order to keep the scourge from running unchecked across Azeroth are completely true, and just as Tirion Fordring plans to sacrifice himself (everything he does is for the sake of honor, it’s no surprise he’s ready to do this) to save Azeroth, a familiar figure, glowing red, speaks from atop the Lich King’s throne.

It’s Bolvar Fordragon, whom we last saw at the WrathGate – we all mourned him as though he were dead, but it’s clear that he’s very much alive and very much on fire: the best explanation I’ve seen of this is that the flames of Alexstraza, the life-binder, when she and her flight descended on the battlefield, being burned by the life-giving flames of the red dragonflight somehow saved and preserved him in this state.

I don’t know all of the details, but Bolvar insists that Tirion give him the helm of the Lich King, and he does. He glows red (instead of Arthas’ blue) just as he’s encased in ice, and demands that everyone leave and never return.

Here’s the video:

Enjoy it while it lasts, the original one that Wow.com posted has been removed at Blizzard’s request.

My question: where are we, as in the player? And how did Bolvar get to this state, or on top of the throne? I guess we’ll have to all download the patch to find out.

This, quite frankly, doesn’t make any sense at all.

Bolvar was incinerated by the red dragonflight, along with all the other dead horde/alliance, to prevent them rising again to serve the Lich King. Now Blizzard is saying he wasn’t incinerated but hung out with the Lich King as some kind of fire-being? Huh?

There are times I wonder if Blizzard has someone else writing these story lines who doesn’t know what they are doing.

Hi DrowNoble – I think you’re on the head with the former more than the latter – I think that they’re going to try and spin this like the flames of Alexstraza have freed him from the circle of life and death (since Alexstraza is the life-binder) and he’s somewhere in between.

What happened to him at the Wrathgate and where he went though, and how he ended up on Arthas’ throne, is all up for grabs. There was apparently a cutscene during a fight with Yoggy in Ulduar that apparently showed him being imprisoned by Arthas, but we don’t know how he got there at all.

I don’t know what Blizzard is up to either – I hope they manage to wrap things up well!

Deathbringer is also Saurfang from the Wrathgate video. If you remember the quest line on both sides, only the armor from Saurfang was recovered and the shield from Bolvar. Obviously the scourge recovered their corpses because you fight Saurfang at the end of the first wing of ICC. And there’s a dialogue at the beginning of ICC between Arthas and Tirion where it is revealed that Bolvar is still alive, you hear him scream and all that jazz. The lich king has been torturing him and his soul ever since the wrath gate. I think they wrapped it up perfectly with this cinematic. A paladin with years of battle field experience (more experience than the juvenile Arthas), combined with the breathe of dragon queen upon his body, will serve a stronger prison for the lich king and keep the scourge from advancing any further into Azeroth. Allowing us heroes of the horde and alliance alike to divert our attention to our homelands, that are being torn asunder by the return of an ancient evil, Deathwing.
