I, like a lot of women, was introduced to the World of Warcraft by my significant other (hereto after called SO). I was attending graduated school in a neighboring state, and we were doing the long-distance thing. During my last year, he was planning on spending his spring break with me, even though I was still in classes and would be unable to have any fun. To keep himself occupied, the SO brought WoW with him and installed it on my computer. During a break from writing yet another paper on Aristotle’s definition of the tragic hero (kill me), he convinced me to try the game. Now, I had always had an aversion to video games. Any attempts to play a console game had left me frustrated, embarrassed, and usually with thumb cramps. Nonetheless, I decided to humor him- he seemed really excited about this game. I rolled a warlock, sat down, and this exchange happed:
“How do I aim?”
“You don’t have to aim.”
Three hours later…
“Macy, can I have the computer back?”

Now, the SO and I share a residence and a high speed internet connection. We both have level 60′s in Hells Bells on Thorium Brotherhood (he’s a Tauren Shaman). On Saturday evenings we sit side-by-side, running Strat or Scholo. While there are some that might suggest that this is not a healthy activity for a couple to share, we really enjoy gaming together. The SO and I, while sharing similar personalities and sensibilities, did not share that many past times. He gamed, I didn’t. That has all changed now. I have geekvolved.
During the school year my “couple” time is cut drastically due to my classes, grading papers, and involvement in the college theatre. Still, we make time for each other- quality time- in Azeroth.

Last night, I logged on to read this as my Guild Announcement of the Day:
“Help a cool person out. Mootrain has been hacked. We are setting up a fund to get his stuff back.” Mootrain is the the number one PvP’er on my server, and he just made High Warlord last week. Now, he is a naked High Warlord.

When I first started playing WoW, I rolled Alliance. I played a human lock for nine months, though I never reached 60 (I was in grad school at the time, and had to be “responsible). In those nine months, I never knew any of the big players on my server (Windrunner). I was abandoned by guild members when they all switched to full-time raiding. I had made one online friend to quest with, but I had to /ignore him when his flirtations became more earnest. I only knew one person in real life who played, my boyfriend, and it was his account that I was using. I was lost in the vast sea of subscribers.

That all changed when I rolled Horde.

After reaching the level to run Wailing Caverns, I found that people I put on my friends list actually /whispered me when I logged on. I recognized names when running Warsong. I could negotiate better deals on auctions about to expire from folks that I has given healthstones to because I was about to log off. I am aware that this warm fuzzy feeling might have something to do with Thorium Brotherhood being a RP realm, but I really think it’s the Horde factor.

And this Horde factor is causing an wave of outrage on the behalf of the greatest warrior on the realm, and an outpooring of generosity. He’s like NOLA, hacked by Katrina. Stay strong Moo, you will be avenged.

W00T! New talents and spells for the expansion have been annouced. The additions to to warlock afflictiion and demonlogy talents are very exciting, espcailly the the max talents of Unstable Affliction and Summon:Fel Guard. The destruction tree doesn’t really impress me.

The warlock class is my favorite, with mage running a (very) distant second. I enjoy everything about the class, and understand my role in the game- support, curses, DOT’s, crowd control, summoning, wipe insurance. My role is NOT to do major damage very quickly. For that, you need a mage. Why, oh why, then is there a a talent tree that basiclly make the warlock into a weak mage? I have never had much use for the Destruction talents while leveling. Now I find that in order to be viable in end-game content, I have to respecc. Resisting to pressure to go pure Conglaration, I will switch from Dark Pact to the old reliable, Shadow Mastery/Ruin. After all, an affliction specced warlock can’t kill a rat quickly.

With the expansion though, it looks like a warlock can stay to true to class and still be wanted in end-game. /cheer.

Also, check this new level 70 Affiction spell:
Seed of Corruption- Imbeds a demon seed in the enemy target, causing 1044 Shadow damage over 18 sec. When the target takes 1044 total damage, the seed will inflict 1110 to 1290 Shadow damage to all enemies within 15 yards of the target.

I think I had an evilgasm.

Follow is not without its perils, however. My guild leader tends to go, as he calls it, “exploring”. I call it “getting lost”. He tends to explore mostly when I am following, and when I return to my desk with a ice cold Red Stripe, we are both dead or dying. The places I have “explored” this way include:
The pirate cove in Tanaris
Elite dragonkin camps in Burning Steppes
Entrance to the Caverns of Time
Seradine
The Dream bough in Feralas
Southeastern Azshara- you know, where Azuregos lives

I am not complaining. There is something spectacular about sitting down just in time to catch a glimpse of a horde of blue dragonkin one-hit you. Still, I think I may install a mini-fridge next to my computer soon.

The new patch will bring with it, I hope, a chance to run Arathi Basin on Thorium Brotherhood. As I posted earlier, one of the reasons a I chose an RP realm is because I wanted a lower population server. While this affords me the luxury of NEVER have to see “Position in Queue” on my log-in screen, it also means that takes forever to get an AB started. For some reason, even on Arathi Basin 2X honor weekends, you’d be lucky to get three or four battles in on a Saturday night. I love Arathi Basin. After today, I may finally be able to lend my demon-fuelled powers to the Defilers.

How about you, readers and authors?? Are there any unpopular battlegrounds on your servers?

I ran out of solo-able quests.

So here I am, so close to 60, and all I have are a handful of (Elite) quests, and about 10 BRD quests. Last week, there were only three 60s in my guild, but we merged with Imperium Brotherhood over the weekend. Hopefully, with the larger ranks, I can get some questing done between classes.

On May 10th, I annouced to my household “I will reach 60 before August 13th!”

You see, August 13 marks the end of my glorious WoW-filled summer. Real Life takes over, and I must go back the classroom. No more gaming from the time I wake up until whenever my wrists scream for me to stop. No more instance runs that begin at midnight and go until 3AM on a weeknight. No more logging on at 4AM to find good deals on the AH. I will have responsiblites, and I dread them as much I dread a stealthed rogue in the flag room.

What worries me is that if I do not reach 60 (I am 58 at this posting) I might take out my resentment on my students.

“Ms. H, this assignment is too hard.”

“Shut up before I curse you to the Nether and back.”

Yeah, that’s going to look good an evaluation.

When dealing with an online economy, you can expect an amount of scamming to come with the territory. I had considered myself impervious to scamming until a few months ago. What follows is a cautionary tale…

Around my mid-twenties, I decided it was time to join a guild. I was looking for a “family style” guild. Low pressure, light RP, friendly to causual and hard-core gamers alike. I found what I was looking for in Circle of Titans. After joining, I was informed by the GL that all members level 20+ were asked to donate 10 percent of their coin or goods once a week to the help build up the guild bank. I was hesitant, but the idea of helping to my new online clan to get on its feet appealed to me.

I know, I know- stupid.

After spending enough time in the guild to donate roughly 20g, I logged on to see my guild tabard blank. The guild had disbanded, and I was out quite a bit of coin. I had been scammed, and I was livid. After a petition to a GM, and many “strong” messages sent to the former GL, I was finally refunded 5g.

I fumed for many days, but then I realized it was my fault. I should have known better that to willingly hand over my hard earned fake money. In fact, we all should know better. If there is a sucker born every minute, imagine how many are rolled in that same amount of time.

Greetings citizens of Azeroth! I am very excited be a contributor to this site, and I hope that I do not disappoint. I have been an avid reader of this blog for many months now, and I am looking forward to sharing my experinces with this community.

Now that the introductions have been dispensed with, on to the real post.

I play exclusivley on Thorium Brotherhood, an RP realm. Choosing an Role Playing realm did not come easy to me, as I am not that into interacting “in character.” In all honesty, I wanted an RP realm because to me RP = lower population. After starting Morvis on her way, I soon discovered that I had probably chosen the lightest RP realm available. I also discovered what RP meant to me: respect for the World. While I don’t commence with role playing speak (and if I do, it always comes out like Shakespeare), I do make a point to salute NPC’s, kneel before Thrall in Org, and make use of /emotes when Alliance scum come across my path unflagged.
While this half hearted attempt to fit in on Thorium Brotherhood might make me the bane of all hard-core RPer’s, I am enjoying myself thoroughly- especailly when I never have to wait in queue to log on.
