Stopped playing for a while, after hitting a rut around level 46 with my dwarf hunter. Came back to discover a change from the patches that actually improves my play experience. On my eMac, underwater adventures were no problem. On my MacBook Pro, they were unbearable. My super-duper new graphics has an Achilles heel. A wet, dank Achilles heel inhabited by shit-eating Murlocs. I got so mad while adventuring in the Wetlands that I kicked a puppy. (Calm down — it was an evil puppy.)

Anyway. Things have changed:

Also, my new-fangled Deepdive Helmet is too swank for words. It’s the reason I got into medicine. Er, I mean, engineering.

The Only Gnome

Gnomes are bad. I hate them. As a general rule, when people have been scumbags to me in play (stealing ore that I fought to get to while I’m standing right there dropping the last local mob, for example), they have been gnomes. I thought that the best I could hope for from a gnome was to leave me the hell alone.

(To be fair, by anti-gnome bigotry descends from D&D, where gnomes also suck. I write this from my hotel room at Gen Con, I shit you not.)

Anyway.

All that said, I must’ve spent fifteen minutes watching this one gnome play with the shaft of light cast by the floating necropolis over Stormwind back in the days of the Scourge invasion. I wish I’d gotten screencaps of his funnier stuff, but suffice to say this guy had a good ten minutes of material seemingly improvised on the spot. That’s a good purpose for the gnome race: genuine funny.

So, thank you, Lich King, for changing my mind.

Although I can’t remember when I got it — some level in the 20s, maybe? — I’ll never forget where I got it: the lighthouse in Westfall. I got it from a ghost pirate, which is maybe the best kind of pirate there is (LeChuck, I’m looking in your direction). It’s the Buckler of the Seas, and it is without a doubt the most spectacular treasure I’ve won in World of Warcraft.

See, it’s a ship’s wheel, right? But you hold it like a shield. Or you strap it to your back and it makes you fly. (In other words, “aesthetically pleasing,” as M. Doughty taught us.) (Also, yes, that’s a Rocketeer joke, too — those of you who know The Rocketeer are the most awesome.)

I carried that damn shield around probably six or seven levels past its usefulness. Then I kept it in my backpack for awhile, in case whatever boring off-the-rack higher-level ginormous shield I was using for real got trashed in battle. Even after I got that prestigious kite shield from the Watchers in Darkshire, I held on to my Buckler of the Seas. Right now, the gift of the ghost pirate is safe in my deposit box, in the Bank, just in case I want to wear it out some night. It is so rad.

What about you? You got some crazy piece of loot locked up in the Bank just because you dig it too much to throw it out?
